A cardiologist is a heart doctor, they do not perform surgeries though they commonly perform heart caths. A cardiovascular surgeon is a doctor who performs surgery on the vessels of the heart and related systems. A cardiothoracic surgeon is a doctor who performs common procedures such as open heart surgery, lobectomies (lobe of lung removed). They can also do surgery on your esophagus, basically anything in your chest.
I hope this helps.
The cardiologist is the non-surgical specialist who treats the heart. The cardiovascular surgeon operates on the heart and related blood vessels, and the cardiothoracic surgeon operates on the heart and lungs, and related vessels. Oftentimes nowadays, the terms cardiovascular surgeon and cardiothoracic surgeon are used interchangeably.
