I believe in psychiatric drugs when you need them. Sometimes you just have to deal with the bad side effects in order to have any quality of life. If you are bi-polar, ask your doctor about Lamictal and Welbutrin. They usually do not cause weight gain and are well tolerated by most people.

Why does Seroquel cause weight gain
I am sure there is a more chemical bioavailability answer that is more specific, but from experience I can answer that the drug makes you so tired and lathargic that you become more sediatary and that causes some weight gain..
I doubt that is it, but it makes some sense from what I have experiecned with the drug....
