no alcohol and medicine do not mix
and natural treatments can be taken with grapefruit or lots of other things
Grapefruit juice in particular interferes with two enzymes that metabolize ur medications, which means too much of it can hit ur bloodstream in high concentrations. High enough to to reach toxic levels, for some of the drugs. Grapefruit is the only citus that will interact, though, interestingly enough. And the effect of it can linger for days- so as long as u r on Seroquel or some of the other psychotropic drugs- including Zoloft & Prozac by the way- grapefruit & it is juice r off the diet. Yes, it really can be that bad. We had a patient on Versed nearly die on us of an overdose, despite taking the ordered dosage, because she ate pink grapefruit for breakfast.
It affects the metabolism of the drug in your body thereby altering it is effect. The chemical makeup of the drug changes.
First of all, grapefruit and its juice has a high acid content that may interfere with some medications. Also, I believe that the grapefruit juice contains substances that block the actions of some enzymes that are contained within your intestines and liver. Certain drugs are supposed to slowly break down, but this speeding up of digestion via grapejuice can make those drugs build up to excessive levels in your blood system.

for some diabetics and many other people grapefruit is no good.
There is something in the grapefruit that will cause the medication not to work usually. Kinda like if someone eats cheese or drinks milk while taking some forms of antibiotics. In other meds it can actually increase the effects so it is best just to follow the guidelines. Here is a good website that might be able to help answer some of your questions.

What it actually does is to amplify the effect of the meds by a factor of something like 100x - so if you eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while you are on Seroquel, or Lipitor, or any of a variety of other meds, it is as though you are taking a massive overdose.
I've never heard this, but maybe it increases the chance for ulcer?
Some meds it, grapefruit renders them useless. One being Lipitor!!!!
Grapefruit can actually neutralize the efficacity of those medications.
