i have had an ekg and an echo and they came back good,now my cardiologists wants me to have a stress test,why

An EKG is done while you are at rest, as is an echocardiogram.
A stress test is done while you are putting stress on your heart, and will show up a lot more than an EKG.

This is not to say an EKG is not helpful. It is, but a stress test is more thorough..

A EKG & an echo show old heart damage (Did u have a heart attack? Do u have a valve problem? Is ur heart enlarged?)
These tests r not generally very good at predicting who will have a heart attack in the future.
A stress test shows ur electrical activity of ur heart while u r running. If there r changes in ur EKG consistent with ur heart not getting enough blood to do the job while under stress (while exercising), this is a pretty good indicator u may have a heart attack in the near future.
Try to cooperate during the test. Run as fast as u can as long as they want u to. Do not wimp out. Certainly, if u have chest pain, tell the tech immediately & expect to get oxygen & medication right away.
If ur stress test is not quite normal, do not be surprised if ur doctor wants to do a cardiac catherization. This is usually done by inserting a tube into a big blood vessel in ur groin & snaking a tube into the arteries of ur heart to see how plugged up they r & is the best predictor of who is going to have a heart attack soon.
Try not to be afraid. The doctor is trying to find out if u r at high risk before something bad happens.

Your cardiologist may order any of the following tests:-
(1) A stress test is performed to determine causes of chest pain, the exercise capacity of the heart, appropriate exercise levels in those beginning an exercise program, & to identify rhythm disturbances during exercise. There may be additional reasons that ur health care provider requests this test.

(2) Stress echocardiography is performed to see whether ur heart is getting enough blood flow and, therefore, enough oxygen when it is put under stress. The intent is to discover & treat any blockage or disease before serious or life-threatening problems develop.
This test may also be used to monitor u if u have a known heart condition. For example, it can show if heart function & blood flow r stable if u have coronary artery disease.

(3) A nuclear stress test measures blood flow to ur heart muscle at rest & during stress. It is performed similar to a routine exercise stress test but provides images in addition to electrocardiograms.
During a nuclear stress test, a radioactive substance is injected into ur bloodstream. This substance mixes with ur blood & travels to ur heart. A special scanner — which detects the radioactive material in ur heart — creates images of ur heart muscle. Inadequate blood flow to any part of ur heart will show up as a light spot on the images — because not as much of the radioactive substance is getting there.
